Vedanta Seeks Approval for Green Sterlite Copper Plant

Vedanta Limited has recently approached the Madras High Court seeking approval for a green copper manufacturing plant, marking a renewed focus on sustainable industrial development and responsible resource management. Thus, Vedanta has filed a new case urging the Tamil Nadu government to consider its applications regarding the green copper plant- Sterlite Copper in Tuticorin (Thoothukudi), which was closed in 2018. Rather than conventional production models, the proposed project focuses on modern, environmentally conscious technologies that align with evolving regulatory expectations and global sustainability benchmarks.

A Fresh Proposal with a Focus on Green Manufacturing

In the latest case, Vedanta has approached the High Court with a different request, asking for its permission to start a new green copper manufacturing facility. According to the petition, Vedanta has submitted several representations between June and November to the Secretaries of the Tamil Nadu Industries and Environment Departments, urging them to look into this matter. However, Vedanta Sterlite Copper request was not considered at all.

The petition seeks a direction from the court to the state government to look into the matter in accordance with the law. Additionally, Vedanta has requested the establishment of an expert committee consisting of representatives from the Central Environment Department, the Central Pollution Control Board, and other relevant authorities. The agenda to set up the committee is to under the feasibility of establishing a green copper plant. Also, the committee will set up a detailed report.

With surging copper demand, India’s dependency on copper also increases manifold. Considering all the aspects, the Chief Justice directed that the newly established case needs to be listed along with the pending hazardous waste case. The bench adjourned the hearing for four weeks, allowing both matters to be taken up together for further consideration.
