Vedanta’s Lanjigarh Expansion: Powering India’s Aluminium Ambitions

Read Time:3 Minute, 40 Second

As global demand for aluminium continues to grow, driven by sectors such as automotive, aerospace, infrastructure, railways, and renewable energy, India is rapidly emerging as a critical player in the global aluminium value chain. In the years to come, as India sets out on its transition towards becoming a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047, aluminium will be an important part of this change. And at the heart of this transformation is Vedanta Aluminium, which is India’s largest aluminium producer. Aligned with India’s need to meet aluminium’s copper domestically, its alumina refinery- Vedanta Lanjigarh refinery has expanded significantly to boost the country’s industrial competitiveness.

A Strategic Capacity Expansion at Lanjigarh

Vedanta Aluminium has successfully increased the production at its Lanjigarh alumina refinery, Odisha, from 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 5 MTPA, more than doubling its previous output.  This steep expansion is a significant milestone as it will elevate the facility to one of the largest alumina refineries globally outside China and position India as the third-largest alumina producer in the world.  Besides, in India, where the Aluminium Market was worth USD 249.83 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow to USD 403.29 billion by 2032, Vedanta’s aluminium expansion will be significant. The company will contribute about 38% of India’s total alumina output, making it the largest single-location alumina refinery in the country.

Alumina, the intermediate product refined from bauxite, is an important feedstock for aluminium smelting. By increasing alumina output, Vedanta strengthens India’s raw material base, reduces dependence on imports, and lays the foundation for expanded aluminium production across the country.

How is the Recent Expansion important for India’s Aluminium Sector?

The enhanced capacity at Lanjigarh has broader implications for the entire Indian aluminium ecosystem. It will:

Boost Domestic Production- Vedanta Lanjigarh refinery now operates at 5 MTPA, raising India’s total alumina capacity to nearly 13 MTPA and positioning the country as the world’s third-largest alumina producer. In FY25, Vedanta Aluminium produced more than half of India’s aluminium at 2.42 million tonnes. So the expansion will let India reliably feed smelters and reduce dependence on foreign alumina supplies.

Improving Self-Reliance- Increased domestic refining assists India in becoming Atmanirbhar Bharat by strengthening local supply chains and encouraging downstream aluminium manufacturing for sectors like EVs, defence, and aerospace.

Supporting Quality Aluminium Products- Vedanta Aluminium’s vertical integration ensures a quick and reliable supply of alumina for smelting. This also backs higher output of value-added aluminium products — from automotive components and construction materials to packaging and electricals.

Global Competitiveness- With facility upgrades and increased production, Vedanta is better positioned to compete with major global producers in both primary aluminium and alumina markets, particularly outside China.

Sustainability and Operational Efficiency-  Apart from production expansion, Vedanta Aluminium’s strategy also focuses on sustainability and operational optimisation. Earlier, Vedanta deployed a dedicated railway line at Lanjigarh to manage the movement of raw materials and finished products, reducing carbon emissions and improving supply-chain efficiency.

Looking Ahead: Capacity and Strategic Expansion

Vedanta’s long-term strategy is clearly focused on improving both scale and integration. Beyond the industrial expansion at Vedanta Lanjigarh refinery, Vedanta has transformed one of the most underprivileged regions of the country, Odisha, through holistic development. Vedanta also operates one of the world’s largest aluminium plants at Jharsuguda, Odisha, with an aluminium smelting capacity of 1.8 MTPA and an associated 3615 MW thermal power generation facility.

Vedanta, with its world-class smelter and power plants, aims to fulfil its mission of spurring emerging applications of aluminium as the ‘Metal of the Future’ for a greener tomorrow.  Through all of the existing operations, Vedanta is catering to the world’s growing aluminium demand.

In Summary

Vedanta Aluminium’s expansion of the Lanjigarh refinery is much more than a capacity upgrade. It’s a strategic investment that reshapes India’s role in the global aluminium landscape. By driving domestic alumina production to world-class levels, strengthening supply chains, and enabling downstream growth, Vedanta is not only helping India become a leading alumina supplier but also laying the groundwork for a stronger, more self-reliant aluminium industry.

This expansion clearly indicates that targeted industrial investments can empower national competitiveness, boost economic growth, and position India as a key player in the future of metals and materials.
