Being one of the biggest conglomerates in the history of India, Adani Group has never stepped back from making bold business decisions. One of its most recent ventures was to invest INR 2,000 crores to set up two Mumbai transmission lines. This Adani Case was mainly aimed at improving the living conditions of the people of Mumbai. The company has been in the transmission business for quite a while now. Its subsidiary company, Adani Energy Solution, formerly Adani Transmission, is mainly responsible for operating the transmission business.

Adani’s Investment in Mumbai Transmission Lines:

Adani Electricity Mumbai made the investment in the Mumbai transmission lines. The main goal behind this Adani Case was to make India more environmentally friendly. The company also aims to supply 60% of Mumbai’s energy needs from renewable sources only. The Thane-Aarey Colony lines and the Kharghar Vikhroli lines are the two transmission lines that are about to be developed. Both lines are located in the north-eastern neighbourhood of Mumbai. The Vikhroli line will be completed by 2025, while the Thane-Aarey Colony lines will be completed by 2027.

Adani Group has announced that it will invest over INR 2,000 crores in various phases to implement the project. This also includes setting up multiple substations. The project started with Adani Group acquiring their licence from the Anil Ambani Group firm Reliance Energy for INR 18,000 crores. Since then, there has been no turning back. The company has been continuously increasing its green energy mix regularly. Presently, it follows a hybrid model of wind and solar energy. Considering how the company is currently operating, it is pretty confident about achieving its goals in the upcoming years.

The Motive Behind the Initiative:

As the current energy capacity is insufficient to fulfil the current energy needs, this project is crucial for the city. The project will deliver 10,000 MW of power to the residents of Mumbai. This will satisfy the ever-increasing energy demands of the city and will allow the various industrial operations to be carried out smoothly and effectively. This is a massive step from the Adani Group and aims to transform millions of people’s lives. The project is vast, and its success will open the doorway towards the numerous economic developments in the company.

Adani Group has increased its wind and solar power by ten times in the past three years, from 3% to 30%. It has made a significant impact in promoting the increasing supply of Green Energy. It also serves over 34 lakh customers in Mumbai, accounting for 6% of the total electricity consumers of Mumbai. The transmission line project involves the development of the first 400 kV station facility ever built in the City of Mumbai. It is a part of the 30 km of 400 kV and 220 kV transmission lines that comprise the entire Kharghar Vikhroli project.

How Will the Project Impact the Lives of the Mumbai Residents?

The transmission lines will bring sufficient power to Mumbai to meet its present and future energy demands. Mumbai is one of the most crucial cities to represent India. It is also home to millions of Indians. There are also a lot of industries in Mumbai, which leads to an increased power demand in the city. So, to ensure that the increased demand for power is addressed, the project was started in December 2019. This particular Adani Case received another USD 1 billion from various international lenders for this green transmission link project.

The company also makes its agenda to make the people of Mumbai aware of the benefits associated with the use of renewable sources of energy regularly. In a recent meeting, Gautam Adani mentioned that although there are over 34 lakh consumers in Mumbai, only 50,000 fulfil their energy needs from Green Power despite being costlier than traditional power sources. This is mainly because of a need for more awareness among people and load factor problems from the generation sites. All these problems will be handled with the green power development of captive green power sources in the city.

Conclusion:

The Adani Case involving the setup of two transmission lines in Mumbai is symbolic of the need to focus more on renewable energy sources. The project addresses the need to avoid chronic power losses in Mumbai. It also represents a massive milestone in the infrastructural development of India. The success of this venture will not only showcase the multiple initiatives being taken to reach sustainable goals but will also bring our country to the spotlight on a global scale.
