Nepotism is based on favoritism granted to relatives in various fields, including business, politics, entertainment, sports, religion and other activities. The term originated with the assignment of nephews to important positions by Catholic-popes and bishops.
This battle started when Kangana Ranaout blamed Karan Johar for being a flag bearer of nepotism.
So is Nepotism in Bollywood wrong?
We don’t think so. Show Business is a high visibility business and a game of extremely high stakes. When people are betting big with their own money, they are more comfortable betting it on someone they know and trust. And if that person happens to be of one’s own flesh and blood, the incentives from the pay-off are further intensified. Also, the failure does not sting as much.
Now just like in gambling it is not necessary that one’s hand will always end up being the winning hand, but at least in Bollywood, it has been observed, that betting big with your own kith and kin pays richer dividends as against betting on a complete stranger who is also a newbie. Also high recall and visibility of a Star Kids guarantees stellar openings at the box-office.
Nepotism is not just part of Bollywood but every profession if you think so.Take politics. Nehru-> Indira-> Rajiv-> Sonia-> Rahul-> Priyanka the list goes on and on.Take business. Most of the businessmen while retiring handed over the reins to their son/daughter.
Nepotism is a way of life in most of the profession where it can be practiced. So you, in Bollywood, when someone from outside enters the industry, they make sure their kids/relatives also enter along with them to make a community/group for themselves. If you trace back and see the 70’s and the 80’s , there were a lot of outsiders who came into the industry and made a mark for themselves and along with them came the family members and they spread their wings and start to grow in Bollywood.
So in short, it’s not only Bollywood that has nepotism in it, you can see many walks of life where this exists.
